Mexico City – Mexico City, the capital of the Mexican state of Michoacan, has a reputation as a hotbed of racism.
A city of 1.6 million, it is also the home of the infamous El Pilar prison, the worst-known prison in Mexico.
Now, the iconic restaurant has a new name: La Casas Mujer.
The restaurant, which opened its doors in the mid-19th century, has long been celebrated as one of Mexico’s most prestigious and exclusive eateries, with its grandiose exterior and extensive culinary offerings.
Its menu ranges from traditional Mexican cuisine to international favourites like chicken tikka masala and poutine, and it is one of the city’s most famous and popular spots.
Now its restaurant La Casándia, which translates as the restaurant of the soul, has become the site of a national protest on Tuesday to protest against racism, forced labour and human trafficking in the state.
“La Casa is a symbol of the way people have always been treated here, and that the history of the place is linked to the racism,” said Carlos Dominguez, the chef-owner of La Casagnes Mujer, which is owned by a Mexican businessman.
“We want to make a difference, to say, this is what we want to change.
We want to give a voice to the people who have been here before us.”
The city’s famous El Pila prison is the citys most famous restaurant.
It was opened by the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century to hold thousands of prisoners who had been sent to its neighbouring state of Coahuila for the death penalty.
After a few years, it was closed, and only a few prisoners were left in the building at the time, according to the city.
“The El Pilias prison is a very special place, it has an interesting history, but the story of its development is also very complex,” Domingue said.
“Many people here have memories of it.
They remember the days when prisoners would sit on the roof and watch the sun come up and go down.”
The restaurant’s name derives from the Aztecs term for people of colour, and the word ‘maqui’ is also Spanish for people with a dark skin tone.
La Casayas Mujera is not the first restaurant to be called La Casaicas MuJera.
In recent years, several Mexican restaurants have been renamed to honour victims of human trafficking.
For example, the owner of the restaurant El Para has been named El Para in Mexico City.
But the name La Casaya Mujer was chosen for the restaurant as it is the only place in Mexico that is officially dedicated to the victims of forced labour.
“For us, we always felt that the word La Casava means, ‘to have been a victim’,” said Domingues brother, Francisco Domingez, who started working at La Casase as a cook.
“I want people to understand, that there are people in Mexico who are victims and that their suffering has been a part of our culture and culture has also been a source of our strength.
This is the reason why La Casada Mujer is such a big success, because we know that it is a place that will help us as a community and in the long term.”
El Casa Mujer opened in 1874, and is the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Mexico and one of several restaurants in Mexico’s capital city, which has one of Europes largest population of Chinese tourists.
It has also had many international clients including celebrities including Bruce Springsteen and Angelina Jolie.
According to Dominguos brother, the restaurant is also one of many places in Mexico where people of different ethnicities come together for traditional Mexican food and drinks, and to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Mexico.
